Cholla Bay is a vibrant, diverse community comprised of upscale residences lining the southern shore of Cholla Bay. Renowned for its stunning natural features, the bay boasts one of the most dramatic tidal fluctuations globally, with an impressive change of approximately 23 feet.
High Tide at Cholla Bay:
Every 15 days, during both the new and full moons when the sun, moon, and earth align, Cholla Bay experiences high tides. Witnessing this phenomenon from JJ’s, a popular spot in the area, is truly remarkable as the tide recedes from the expansive 60-acre bay.
During high tide, many individuals venture into the bay for activities such as clamming or searching for sand dollars. It’s important to note that sand dollars can typically be collected if they are not alive, distinguished by their dark color. Conversely, white sand dollars are no longer living and can be safely gathered.
As the bay empties, it becomes possible to walk across to Black Mountain, but caution must be exercised to avoid being stranded by the incoming tide. Towards the Isla del Mar area, the bay floor becomes muddy at low tide, posing a risk of getting stuck, even for vehicles equipped with 4-wheel drive capabilities.

For those eager to launch a boat, the process is convenient and straightforward near JJ’s. Depending on the tide, the staff will assist by attaching a device known as a Giraffe to your boat trailer, facilitating its smooth transition into the water. Once launched, you can spend the day indulging in fishing expeditions within the bay or exploring the waters around the point of Cholla Bay. When you’re ready to return, simply radio the boat launch to arrange for pickup.
After a day on the water, unwind and enjoy refreshments at JJ’s, where you can savor cold beers and lunch while admiring the picturesque views. Alternatively, venture to the Cholla Bay Oyster House for another delightful dining experience. Additionally, Cholla Bay offers excellent opportunities for kayaking, with convenient launch points available near JJ’s for your convenience.
